Cutting the Cable

One of the recent changes made here at casa de Laurendy was the decision to go without cable tv. Without a roommate to spilt the costs, paying nearly $100 a month to watch tv seemed a bit silly. So with the purchase of a RCA flat panel antenna, my cable free experiment began.

It has only been two weeks since I cut the cable, and thus far I've only had two problems: 1) no matter how many scans I do, I can't get ABC - the antenna finds the station, I just can't get the signal. 2) my mother has a DVR deleting problem - there are a few shows I really wanted to watch on ABC and cable (mostly TLC and HGTV shows) that my mom was going to record for me. . . she did record them. . . then she forgot why she recorded them and deleted them when she was cleaning up her DVR. . .

So we'll give it another try this week and hope she doesn't delete Modern Family before I get to see it.

I've been without cable since college and I only miss it when I'm at my parent's house and am able to watch TLC and the Food Network.

We used to have the same problem with ABC. We bought a better antenna and it has helped some it also depends on where the antenna is on whether or not we get good reception and we have a hulu plus account (or as I like to call it the poor man's DVR) where I can watch FOX, ABC, and NBC shows and some cable shows like ABC Family and MTV. CBS and the CW show their stuff online but you have to catch it within a week of it airing.

I use sidereel.com to keep everything in order (and occasionally use it to search for torrents of my HBO and Showtime addictions. (My crocheting keeps me in front of the tv a lot lol!)

I've moved the antenna a few times, but still no ABC - and Fox is a little weird too, I get it fine during prime time and on weekends, but at 5:15 on a Tuesday, no Fox. So far I haven't gone stir crazy, and I've found ION and ION Life witch has a lot of Canadian HGTV/DIY shows - so the experiment continues. . .

Though, I am having some Paula Deen withdrawl issues
