DIY: Black Thumb Terrarium

Inspired by the awesome succulent bowl I spotted last week, I decided to try my hand at putting one together myself.

Only one slight problem, I have a black thumb (as opposed to a green one).  Now I know what you're thinking, succulents are super hardy, easy to take care of, and really hard to kill. . . well folks, I've killed so many succulent plants that at this point if I even get to close to one they off themselves out of fear of my taking them home with me.

So what is a black thumbed succulent lover to do? Go plastic. There are some really good fake succulents out there, I mean they look plastic in real life, so they make some super realistic fakes.

What you need to make your own:

  • fake succulents (I got mine at Pottery Barn, but you can find them at most craft store or online)
  • a large glass floral bowl or low wide glass vase
  • a bag of small rocks (from a craft store)
  • some styrofoam
  • a hot glue gun
Break up your styrofoam into pieces, you want to cover enough of the bottom of your bowl so that you have something to stick your succulents into, but not enough that it will show through the rocks.
Then use your hot glue to stick the styrofoarm pieces in place. I used hot glue because it easily peels off of the glass if you change your mind later.

Now take your succulents and arrange them in the styrofoam until you're happy with they're layout (don't worry, you can always rearrange them later). Finally, add the rocks to the bowl making sure to cover the styrofoam.

And then you have yourself a Black Thumb Terrarium!

Side note: I'm sorta wishing I would have used white rocks, or smaller pebbles, but I'll live with this version for now.
